VOLUNTEER STORIES

Megan Toth
I have done a lot of volunteering in my local community for my church, my library, through my school’s Key Club, my local hospital, and the North Shore Animal League. But nothing was as fulfilling or different as my two weeks at Wagon Road Camp for the Children’s Aid Society. Here I was able to help disadvantaged children, clean up the local church where we lived, and learn to live with 12 new girls where we cooked together and grew together like a family.

When I first arrived at Wagon Road’s grounds, everyone was so nervous to meet our group for the first time. But we quickly bonded together, learning about everyone else and learning what would be expected of us the next morning when our young campers got off of the bus. My group of 12 young boys was so much fun and so active! They made me laugh every single day! During the two weeks that I helped to oversee them, they had fun looking for fish in a pond and doing arts and crafts. On the last day, I was so sad to leave them. They, in turn, were so sad to see me go and they made me a special poster with their handprints on it so that I could remember them. It is in a prominent place on my wall in my bedroom. It was the same way with my fellow volunteers. We had had so much fun together and worked so hard. On one weekend day, we drove with our leader to the beach to have a nice, quiet day. We also relaxed at night by walking into town for ice cream or going “grass sledding” down the hill at camp!

This was my first experience with Landmark but hopefully it will not be my last! I enjoyed everything about the experience and it really helps you to learn about yourself, what you can accomplish, and how you can impact another person’s life. My experience with Landmark is helping me to decide to major in psychology in college and hopefully become a school psychologist or work with children in another area. I also gained the self-confidence from my Landmark experience to go away to college and live with new people.
