James Hooper-Hamersley
This past summer, pursuing my interest in history, I became part of Landmark Volunteers, a nationally based service organization supporting our nation’s historical landmarks. Probably one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life was to apply to be a volunteer. I went for two weeks as a member of the team at Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown/Yorktown. I flew on my own for the first time to embark on a journey of independence and friendship. I lived with my team cooking, cleaning and yes, of course, doing laundry! I made some great friendships not only with my team but also the staff. One makes a bond when putting in so much effort. You come home from work feeling accomplished from painting miles of fence, stacking mountains of firewood, and building benches. I suggest everyone try to become a part of Landmark Volunteers in any way they can.
