VOLUNTEER STORIES

Sihao Cao
I have experienced many great events in life, but the most memorable event has to be the experience of Landmark Volunteers in the summer of 2007. During that two-week stay at Plimoth Plantation, I learned the values of teamwork, self-determination, and contribution toward my community. While I was there, I interacted with the museum’s friendly staff, worked on various projects on the plantation, and learned the Indians’ distinctive life styles. Furthermore, I have made some great friends who I will be communicating with for years to come. However, the most valuable thing that I acquired from that experience is the significance of community service. It is my belief that if you choose to help your society by sacrificing your valuable time today, you have helped to create a better tomorrow. Hence, through this fine experience, I feel I have facilitated our society’s future in our community, and preserved both the Pilgrims’ and the British Colonists’ cultures and customs.

During an adolescent’s teen years, he or she will experience many pleasant occasions. Although this experience is something I will cherish forever, it taught me a lot more about young adults than ever before. It is so remarkable when distinctive individuals, such as those who volunteered at Plimoth Plantation, are willing to sacrifice their valuable summer weeks and collectively volunteer for a cause that will benefit our society. Therefore, I feel extremely privileged in meeting those special friends and working on the Plantation with those extraordinary folks who I will be talking to for a very long time.

Throughout one’s life, there will always be a time when an individual says, ‘why did I not make that commitment?’ I am currently a senior in high school, and I have experienced many great memories in the past seventeen years of my life. There is one thing, however, that I’m regretting and that is ‘why didn’t I hear about the Landmark Volunteers program earlier?’ Hence, I truly advocate for anyone who is seeking to contribute towards one’s community and is willing to sacrifice a couple of weeks of one’s summer vacation to apply as a Landmark Volunteer. I can assure that person of one distinctive fact---he or she will experience an occasion which that individual will never forget.
