Meet Jeffrey Schommer
Currently a student at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, pursuing a Post Baccalaureate Secondary Education license, Jeffrey earned a B.A. in Urban Studies from the Minneapolis branch of UM and spent the next couple of years working with Charlotte Center, Inc. in the Town Planning and Neighborhood Design field and as an independent consultant. In 2001-02, he took a year off, spending half of it touring the U.S. and the other half working as a firefighter in the Superior National Forest in Northern Minnesota. He went back to urban planning part time and also worked on an organic farm in Wisconsin. He so enjoyed working with teens in that capacity that he decided he would like to teach high school. He enrolled in a teaching program and volunteered at Harbor City International School and at Orlean Middle School in Duluth. He helped develop lesson plans and co-lead classes in both schools.
In addition to traveling through the United States, Jeffrey has visited Thailand, Ireland, Japan, and Western Europe. He enjoys backpacking, gardening, and working with young people. His previous volunteer experience includes teaching U.S. Citizenship classes, distributing overstock organic produce to inner city neighborhoods, and offering design services through public workshops. This past summer, he led his first team of Landmark volunteers on the Colorado Trail.
