WILL SOMEONE MEET MY CHILD AT THE AIRPORT?
Yes. Landmark will have a representative meet all those arriving by plane at the designated airport during the specific window of time as stated on the travel form. At some sites there is flexibility and at others (the ones that are far from the site) Landmark can only allow for slight variation since the team leader must drive back to the site to meet those arriving by car. Landmark has volunteeer Community Coordinators at each site who are knowledgeable about the area and can answer more specific travel questions.
CAN YOU ACCOMMODATE THE TRAVEL NEEDS OF MY 14½ YEAR OLD?
Students between the ages of 14½ and 16 who fly may need to be registered with the airline as an unaccompanied minor. Some airlines charge a fee for this and require a photo ID of the adult meeting them on arrival. Unfortunately, Landmark Volunteers cannot provide assistance for you. If your child falls in this age range, it is our recommendation that you choose sites where family members or friends are available to meet them at the airport or select cities that are within driving range.
DO I HAVE TO PAY MY OWN TRAVEL COSTS?
Volunteers' travel is at their own expense. There are opportunities offered in over 21 states, allowing the participants to arrive by a means of transportation that is convenient for them - either car or plane.
WHEN SHOULD I MAKE MY FLIGHT RESERVATIONS?
You should make your flight reservations after you receive your acceptance letter from Landmark Volunteers. You will receive a travel form with complete details. Fill out the form and return it to Landmark Volunteers by May 1st.
MAY I SCHEDULE MY CHILD ON A FLIGHT THAT WILL ARRIVE BEFORE THE DESIGNATED WINDOW?
Yes, however remember that the Landmark representative is only at the airport during the stated window of time. Most volunteers bring along a book or magazine to read while waiting. Please note that your child is unsupervised until the representative arrives.
WHAT ABOUT A FLIGHT SCHEDULED TO ARRIVE LATE?
Landmark Volunteers cannot accommodate flights outside the stated windows of time. The representative is only at the airport during the times stated on the travel form. If scheduling your child to arrive after the designated window of time is absolutely necessary, then transportation from the airport to the site becomes the family's responsibility. Even then, this is not at all advisable because team-building activities and orientation cannot begin in earnest until the whole team is there.
MAY I SCHEDULE MY CHILD ON A FLIGHT THAT WILL DEPART BEFORE THE DESIGNATED WINDOW?
No. The Landmark representative needs to be at the site for those leaving by car and then is scheduled to depart for the airport with all those flying at a certain time. To ask the representative and the group to leave earlier would be not only very inconvenient but also unfair to those fliers with departures toward the end of the window. We cannot accommodate an early departure.
WE ARE ARRIVING BY CAR. MAY I DROP MY CHILD OFF EARLY?
No. Driving times are definite. Do not arrive earlier or later as there will be no one to welcome you. The Landmark representative picks up the volunteers from the airport before meeting those at the site.
IS IT OKAY FOR MY CHILD TO DRIVE HIMSELF OR HERSELF?
If your child drives to the program, he or she will be required to park his or her car in the location designated by the Team Leader and must leave the keys with him or her. Driving any vehicle during the volunteer’s stay is absolutely prohibited and will result in automatic dismissal.
WHAT DO I DO IF I RETURNED MY TRAVEL FORM BUT MY PLANS CHANGED?
If the volunteer’s travel arrangements change once you have returned the travel form, please notify the Landmark Admissions office in writing. You may email those changes to admissions@volunteers.com, fax them at 413-229-2050, or mail them to PO Box 455, Sheffield, MA 01257.
WHAT DO I DO IF THE AIRLINES CHANGED INFORMATION OR I MISSED MY CONNECTION ON DAY OF ARRIVAL?
On the travel day, if arrival times are changed, please do the following:
- Call the Community Coordinator, and alert them. Their number is in the information packet you will receive a few weeks before the program begins.
- Page the Team Leader at the airport where they were to meet the volunteer. We recommend researching the phone number of the airport BEFORE the day of travel.
- If a flight was cancelled, make the necessary arrangements for your volunteer to arrive at the designated airport. Report the new arrangements to the Team Leader and/or Community Coordinator, who will work with you to ensure your volunteer is met.
- Call the Landmark Volunteers office and report the new arrangements to the on call staff.
MY FAITH REQUIRES ME NOT TO TRAVEL ON SATURDAYS. CAN I STILL ATTEND?
Landmark has many programs that are suitable for those with religious restrictions. Landmark does offer some programs that do not require Saturday travel as well as programs that do not require Friday travel.
