FAQs - HOW TO APPLY

HOW OLD MUST A VOLUNTEER BE?
A volunteer must be 141/2 by June 1 and must be entering 10th, 11th, or 12th
grade. Once a student graduates, he/she is too old for our program. There
are NO exceptions! Students in their senior year are eligible for our spring
sessions.

MY CHILD IS A RETURNING VOLUNTEER - MUST HE/SHE REAPPLY?
Yes, but the application process is simpler. Returning volunteers simply
answer two essay questions and waive the teacher recommendation/evaluation.
The Team Leader's letter from the previous year is used as a reference.

HOW LATE CAN I APPLY?
Landmark Volunteers has a rolling admissions policy and continues to admit students throughout the spring and summer. As long as space is available at specific locations, students may apply and be accepted

CAN FRIENDS OR SIBLINGS APPLY TO THE SAME PROGRAM?
Landmark Volunteers does not encourage friends or siblings to attend the same program because we feel that the experience of the volunteer is a much richer one if he/she has an opportunity to meet new people from different backgrounds. Volunteers usually arrive at the site without knowing others, and the team leader conducts icebreaker activities and games that help the students to feel comfortable with one another. In our experience if two or more friends or siblings attend the same program, they are less likely to spend time interacting with others. Our volunteers, themselves, have indicated that when friends arrive together at a program, the experience for everyone is diminished.

WHAT DOES IT COST TO ATTEND?
The tax-deductible payment for the two-week summer program is $1,300 for those applications postmarked on or before March 15th and $1,400 for those postmarked after that date. The payment for one-week spring programs is $750. Landmark Volunteers is a tax-exempt organization and payments to it are tax-deductible to the extent provided by law. $100 of the payment is due as a deposit with the application. See Payment Policy.

CAN I GET MY DEPOSIT BACK IF I CHANGE MY MIND ABOUT GOING?
No. Once you are accepted to a site, even if it's not your first choice, we will not refund a deposit.

CAN I ATTEND MORE THAN ONE PROGRAM?
Yes. When applying, enclose a $200.00 deposit with your application and check the appropriate box on the bottom of the application form. Also, list the required 6 site preferences (12 total) per session dates. We do ask that the sessions NOT be back to back. We have found that volunteers need to go home and regroup in order to do well at the second site.

CAN I LIST ONLY ONE SITE PREFERENCE ON MY APPLICATION?
No. It is Landmark Volunteers' policy for each applicant to select and list six site preferences. Each program is filled on a first come, first serve basis. Landmark encourages students to focus on the experience as a whole, not one program.

WILL YOU PENCIL MY CHILD INTO HIS OR HER FIRST CHOICE BEFORE YOU RECEIVE HIS OR HER APPLICATION? No. Every applicant must be accepted before he or she is assigned to a program.

WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED AND MISPLACED MY FORMS?
You may print out any of the following pdf forms:
Click here for Release of All Claims
Click here for Standards of Conduct

For a copy of your specific site travel form, either call the Landmark office at 413-229-0255 or click here.

DO I HAVE TO SIGN THE RELEASE FORM?
Yes. Landmark requires that both custodial parents sign the release form before a student may attend the program.

WHY DIDN'T I GET MY FIRST CHOICE?
Once a student is accepted as a volunteer, placement in a program is based on a first come, first serve basis. If your first choice is full, we look at your second choice. If that is full, we look for availability at your third choice, and so on and so on. Therefore, we do encourage students to apply early in order to be placed in one of their top six choices.

Landmark Volunteers is a nonprofit organization providing high school students with community service opportunities at important institutions across America.
